Spinel was made famous for being in crown jewels the world over; what many thought was ruby was actually spinel. Now spinel is rarer than the rubies it imitated in the past. Spinel occurs in beautiful reds, pastel shades of pink, purple, vivid colours pink, pinkish orange and the very rare cobalt blue.
